“This isn’t gunboat diplomacy, it’s Al Capone in his syphilitic period trying to do a shakedown.”
-Charlie Angus, member of the Canadian Parliament
CNN Video: Canadian MP fires back at Trump.
“What was interesting was this was the classic bully runs away at the first sign of a real confrontation.”
-Nobel prize winning economist Paul Krugman on “The Beat with Ari Melber”
MSNBC Video: Flailing Trump 'folds' immediately in failed tariff clash
Trump “postponed” his plan to impose draconian tariffs on our neighbors and best trading partners, Canada and Mexico.
“Trump will spin this as a victory, Daily Kos observed. “‘I got what I wanted and more — much more. It was the best deal ever.’ The reality is otherwise. Both Mexico and Canada made vague promises. But there will be no real change — or money spent. Trump had seen the polls — and realized people knew his tariffs would slam their pocketbooks.”
Knee-deep in the hoopla:
Trying to follow the Trump-generated chaos is almost impossible. It’s like binge watching all 190 Three Stooges shorts in one sitting. If professional news outlets are struggling to cover the insanity, one guy in his basement office doesn’t have a chance, now that Project 2025’s (or is it Agenda 47’s) plan to dismantle the federal government is kicking into high gear.
Anyway, here are some random items that caught my attention. I’ll post the rest in the Notes section on the website. But I really recommend watching Late Night with Seth Meyers’ “A Closer Look”. He hits all the major points and the humor almost makes it tolerable.
‘Headed for technofascism’: the rightwing roots of Silicon Valley. The industry’s liberal reputation is misleading. Its reactionary tendencies – celebrating wealth, power and traditional masculinity – have been clear since the dotcom mania of the 1990s.
Trump shares the White House’s ‘dream’ for the federal workforce. By touting the idea of moving public-sector employees to the private sector, Trump effectively shared a plan that would break the federal government.
Bird flu crisis enters new phase. The outbreak is intensifying as the Trump administration maintains a pause on most external federal health agency communications, including publication of CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), a venerable source of scientific reports on public health.
‘He’s become America’s assignment editor’: US media owners bend to Trump. “core segments of the US media landscape – via the wealthy billionaires and gigantic corporations that own them – have seemingly caved under Trump’s pressure or apparently sought to curry favor with the new administration.”
‘The grocery stores are lying’: Farmer’s market customer exposes the real reason eggs are so expensive. “So it’s like yeah, the mass-produced egg, they might cull more flocks and everything and be more affected by that, but he’s just largely unaffected by it. So it’s just more corporate greed.”
Get ready, the Discover-Capital One merger could transform the credit card market. The combined business could even become a serious challenger to Visa and Mastercard.
